// Habitats //

Environmental Protection Act defines habitats as: unique functional unit of eco system, defined by geographic, biotic and abiotic features, alls habitats of the same kind make one category of habitat.

Concerning the origin and necessity of active protection, habitats can be divided on natural, semi-natural (anthropogenesis), and artificial.

Natural habitats

Natural habitats originate without human influence, as the cause of geographic, climatic, edaphically and other factors of the area. Such habitats in the Nature Park Telašćica are: forest habitats, coast and the sea. According to the map of habitats in the Republic of Croatia natural habitats cover 3.73% of the land area in Nature Park Telašćica.

Semi-natural (anthropogenesis) habitats

Semi-natural or influenced by humans habitats develop under influence of human activity, such as disafforestation etc. Typical anthropogenesis are semi-natural meadows. Such habitats in the area of Natural Park Telašćica are: meadows and bushes. Most of the meadow habitats developed through cattle-breeding that was present for centuries in the Park area. The new habitat was conditioned by new varieties of plants, animals and mushrooms, which is the main reason for preservation of biological and landscape diversity in the Park. Due to the decrease or complete wipe-out of cattle-breeding in the second half of the 20th century all kinds of meadows are left for natural succession, i.e. choked with forest vegetation. This process endangers all varieties of plants, animals and mushrooms attached to the meadows.

According to the map of habitats in Republic of Croatia anthropogenesis habitats (meadows and bushes) cover 90.02% of the land area in Nature Park Telašćica.

In the area of Nature Park Telašćica there are several puddles (stagnant waters) which were created by people for the benefit of agriculture and cattle-breeding.

The same as with the meadows, the cease of cattle-breeding caused the processes of covering-up, succession and drying of puddles. This endangered varieties associated with damp habitats. Due to the small amount of surface water present in the Park, puddles represent important localities for the general fauna of this area.

Artificial habitats

Artificial habitats are related to cultivated nonforest areas.
According to the map of habitats in the Republic of Croatia, artificial habitats (cultivated nonforest areas) cover 6.25% of the land area in Nature Park Telašćica. They are mostly related to the gardens (in the fields) and olive groves, also very important for the preservation of identifiably of the Park cultural landscape.
